21st December: Non-denominational End of Year Paddle
December 9th, 2008 (Phil)
Everybody is invited to Wokingham Canoe Clubs non-denominational end of year paddle.
What better way is there to celebrate making it though another year than a nice paddle.
As it’s a bit chilly at this time of year we will be taking hot drinks (including mulled wine) and mince pies .
We will be doing the Oxford Circuit, which at a distance of 9 miles, starts at Port Meadow which is just off the A40 North of Oxford. So we will be meeting at the car park is next to the Trout Inn (the second home of Inspector Morse) at 9:30.
The paddle begins in a back stream by Godstow Bridge and joins the main river below Godstow Lock. Shortly before reaching Osney Bridge, look for a junction on your left with a foot bridge over it, and turn here into the Sheepwash channel. This takes you under the railway and joins the Oxford Canal at Isis Lock. Turn left into the side stream and portage up a low bank onto the canal just above the lock. Now you paddle north on the canal for about three miles, portage Wolvercote Lock, and continue up to Dukes Lock. Turn left before the lock into Dukes Cut. As you enter the cut you will see a shallow entry lock back to the Thames level, portage this and you are heading west back towards the River Thames. At the Tee junction turn left into the back water called Pixey Mead. A short paddle to a small weir on the right and a mill entrance to the left, portage on the extreme right of the weir against low concrete piling. The last part of the paddle takes this narrow, shallow back stream with some over hanging trees back to Godstow Bridge and now back at start point at the Port Meadow car park, and a nice warm pub.
So I hope you will join us on the river, if you are interested, send me an e-mail answering the questions below.
Remember borrowing Club equipment needs to be arranged with the Boson, and signed out in the book.

Paddlesport Challenge - Dragon Boat Regatta - Sunday 9th November
November 2nd, 2008 (Shirley)
The third event in this season’s Paddlesport Challenge is our home event. This is the first time we have hosted an event. The Wokingham team is in first place after two events so let’s hope we can pull off a win on our home stretch of water. dragon-boat-poster
