The Appeal for a Level Three Coach is Open!

This year appears to be passing by quickly April is almost over and the next event we have scheduled is a surfing trip at Saunton Sands on 10th and 11th of May

Magic Seaweed give a good surf forecast, but with my lack of surfer knowledge it means nothing to me so it’s probably best just to pass on the address to everybody to check themselves.

As for accommodation, it’s a camping trip so, err, bring your own. We will be using the Lobb Fields Campsite and, depending on final numbers it should cost about £15 per person.

So I hope you will join us on the sea, if you are interested, send me an e-mail answering the questions below.

Spend the Spring Bank Holiday exploring the River Thames, camping overnight.

Last year we made the journey from Sandford to Pangbourne, this time we will be starting higher up at Buckland Marsh and working our way down to Long Wittenham over the three days.

Join us for the weekend or if you would prefer only to join in on the days that suit you.

The Plan
Saturday: Meeting in the lay-by across the river from the Trout Inn, Tadpole Bridge, Buckland Marsh, Faringdon, SN7 8RF. Paddling downstream for 12 miles to camp at Pinkhill Lock, Eynsham, Oxon, OX29 4JH.

Sunday: Continuing on from Pinkhill Lock campsite and paddling 10 miles to stay at Oxford Camping International, 426 Abingdon Road, Oxford, OX1 4XN, which is just off Hinksey Stream.

Monday: Finally paddling from Oxford Camping International for 11 miles to the Plough Pub, 24 High Street, Long Wittenham, Abingdon, OX14 4QH.

The Trout Inn don’t have a campsite anymore so the closest place to stay if you require accomadation on the Friday night is Lincon Farm.

You will need to bring food for the length of your stay: breakfasts, lunches and evening meals. It should be possible to eat out in the evening.

Please confirm to me when you will be paddling: it would be great for people to arrange to share transport, and I also need numbers to book the campsites.

The cost will vary - probably between £5 and £30 per person - depending if you paddle for one day or the whole weekend.

If you are planning on borrowing club equipment it needs to be arranged with the Boson, and signed out in the book.

So I hope you will join us on the river, if you are interested, send me an e-mail answering the questions below.

For the uninitiated - the boards are yellow plastic, about 7″ square and numbered 1 -9.

If anyone can shed any light on the whereabouts of these boards, please contact Julie Hall.

Alternatively if you wish to remain anonymous you can just pop them into the club bay under cover of darkness!!

It has been drawn to the attention of the Canoe Club Committee that members are not wearing Buoyancy aids and Crash Helmets when paddling in or around the Weirs. Members are reminded of the danger.

Please find below an extract from the BCU Health

Where “white water” or the shooting of weirs, is involved: the wearing of buoyancy aids and crash helmets is mandatory for slalom and wild water racing, and should be strongly advised for other events where an obvious risk is present.

Participation should be limited to those who declare themselves competent to handle the conditions, taking into account the type and amount of safety cover it is practical to provide at sites of particular difficulty.

After a difficult early wake up, we were happy to see that the 4 kayaks were strongly hold on the roof, we were a bit anxious as it was the first time we carried some, but the journey went very well. It was quite cold when we arrived at the Yat, but then luckily the weather was nice all day, and even though it wasn’t sunny, it was reasonably warm and dry for October.

It was our first Wokingham Canoe Club trip and we really were going into it blind not knowing anyone who was going or what to expect.

We arrived at Symonds Yat with a certain amount of trepidation as we were looking forward to the day but at the same time we didn’t want to hold back the group as we all had limited experience. However, we shouldn’t have worried as the make up of the group included an equal number of juniors and adults with a mixture of abilities. (more…)
