Cardboard Boat Race ~ Saturday 18th July

June 24th, 2009 (Phil)

Please pre-register your team so I can get an idea of numbers.

g47431It’s time for Wokingham Canoe Club annual Cardboard Boat Race. It’s a challenge for all the family where you have to design, construct and race a boat made of cardboard. Come along and see if your ideas will float.

Starting at10 o’clock, teams have two hours in which to build a one man craft using the provided heap of empty cardboard boxes and other rationed items.

The craft are then taken to the water for a race of both endurance and speed and the paddler who spends the longest time dry wins.

Treasure Hunt ~ Sunday 20th September

June 24th, 2009 (Phil)

Saturday the 19th is ‘talk like a pirate day’ so here we go:

There be booty about the centre if ya can find it, join a posse of pirates to head out and find the hidden gold chocolate bullion.

Okay, enough of that,  join us at the Wokingham Waterside Centre for our annual Treasure Hunt, travel the Thames and find the clues to lead you to the hidden treasure.

Spooky Paddle ~ 25th October 2009

June 24th, 2009 (Phil)

Halloween is getting close so let’s have a night time paddle up the River Styx Thames.

This will be a centre based paddle and we are planning to start at 4 o’clock in time to see the sun sink away and the night draw in. Return to the centre for a cauldron of eye of newt soup (only joking it’ll just be plain old vegetable).

As this is a night time paddle all boats need to be lit, so try your best to do this in a spooky way.  There will be a prize for the best fancy dress and carved pumpkin.

The river tolls will be 50p for Juniors and £1 for adults, Warning:  fines will be issued for mundane dress.

Junior Dragon Boat Training

May 17th, 2009 (Shirley)

Junior dragons on fire at Henley

April 26th, 2009 (Shirley)

Junior dragon boat teams from Wokingham Canoe Club have once again put in impressive performances at The Henley Dragon’s Annual Junior Regatta, winning three of the four main trophies. The club entered three teams; ‘Dragonflies’ U14 girls, ‘Wrymlyns’ U14 boys and ‘Warriors’ U16 boys.

Round one saw the Warriors get off to a fantastic start with a time of 1:12.53 which was beaten only by the Blazing Paddles team who were racing in the U18 category and included a number of GB paddlers. The Wrymlyns set the standard for the U14 teams with a time of  1:28.09 with the Dragonflies not too far behind on 1:34.24.

An increasing wind meant that the next two rounds were slower but exciting nonetheless and the teams from Wokingham worked hard to keep their noses in front of the opposition. The Warriors narrowly missed a place in the major final by just over half a second, the place going to Beccies Babes, another U18 team. They had to be content with a place in the minor final against the Severn Spiritz who had travelled from Worcester to take part in the event. The race was a closely fought affair which saw the Warriors victorious by the narrowest of margins but enough to secure the U16 trophy.

The Dragonflies won their tail race, seeing off teams from Woodley Scouts and Hurst Air Scouts. The girls won the trophy for the highest placed all-girls team.

The Wyrmlyns fought magnificently throughout the competition to secure the U14 trophy.

Junior Racing Training

March 30th, 2009 (Shirley)

With effect from 2nd April there will be a training session every Thursday with Brian Kelly at 18:30.

This is in addition to your usual Saturday training.

Junior Dragon Boat Training

March 30th, 2009 (Shirley)

Training will be on Saturday at 14:30  and Wednesday at 18:00.
The Henley Junior Regatta will take place on 25th April - make a note in your diary, please!

We have 18 Juniors so far and have 6 more that have shown an interest. We would like to put in an all Girls team so if there are any girls aged between 11 - 18, please come on down. We also have room for more boys- no experience required just enthusiasm and a little determination.

Those Juniors that have raced over the past couple of years and are now experienced paddlers may need to help with some of the new paddlers from time to time. Remember it’s the team that wins not individuals and your help will be very much appreciated.

February 22nd, 2009 (Shirley)

Some of our racing juniors have been on a winning streak!
  • Hafsa Kabeer won the prize for ‘BEST VISITING JUNIOR’ in the Hare and Hounds series at Wey - results.
  • Sara Kabeer (2nd ~ Girls Lightnings) and Ed Pearson (3rd ~ Boys Lightnings) were awarded medals for  last year’s West Thames Grand Prix series of events. This was a particularly splendid achievement as they only took part in two out of the four qualifying events.

Sara and Ed show off their medals. (from the left: Paul Wycherley, Ed Pearson, Brian Kelly, Sara Kabeer and Andy Gray).
