Rescue training

Saturday 14 September

We have been offered a date to run some rescue training for member. The old adage is that we are all "between swims", falling in happens to us all at some stage no matter how experienced you are. This is a great opportunity for new and experienced members to get a refresher on their rescue skills. This course is applicable to everybody, i.e. racers, paddle boarders, dragon boaters, kayakers and canoeists. Attending a rescue training course will give you the confidence to paddle with your peers outside of club sessions, to join club trips and to be able to help yourself and other paddlers when they get in to trouble.

This could be run as either a half day course or a full day course depending on interest. The course is scheduled for September when water is warmest as you will need to get wet in order to practice your rescue skills, so make the most of the warm water to get skilled up.

Date: Saturday 14th September

Location: Waterside Centre, TVP

Trainer: Amie Warner

Syllabus: Based on the Paddle UK syllabus for the "Paddle Safer" https://britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/paddle-safer/ forthe half day course. If there is interest in a full day course it will be based on the Paddlesport safety and rescue course https://britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/paddlesport-safety-and-rescue/.

Cost: Yes, TBC depending on numbers and whether full or half day. Approx £50-120

Please let me know if you are intersted in taking part in this training by Whats App or safety@wokinghamcanoeclub.co.uk

Kind Regards

Tom Dixon

Broads camping trip

Friday 20 September

Norfolk Broads

I am planning a weekend camping trip to the Broads national park in Norfolk 20th-22nd September. At this stage I am gathering expressions of interest so that I can book us in as a group to a campsite, likely to be north east of Norwich near to Hickling Broad. You will need your own camping equipment to join the trip, although you are welcome to book your own local accomodation if you don't want to camp. The paddling will be through a mix of slow moving rivers, possibly with some tidal flow and the occasional crossing of open water as we go through a "broad" (lake). There should be some opportunities to see wildlife, windmills/pumps and possibly a wherry, a type of traditional local sailing boat on the Broads.

Below is a suggested rough itinerary for the trip.

Friday 20th September:
Leave Reading in the early afternoon, 3 .5 hr drive to campsite (exact one TBC). Pitch tents and have evening meal in a local pub.

Saturday 21st September:
Paddle the river Ant from Wayford Bridge to South Walsham Broad via Barton Broad (10-12 miles)
Free time to explore the area in later afternoon
Evening meal at a local pub.

Sunday 22nd September:
Pack up campsite
Paddle Hickling Broad and Horsey Broad to the Horsey wind pump and back (10-12 miles)
Drive home to Reading, unload boats etc. Home 6-8pm

If you are interested can you please let me know by Friday 5th July so that I can get a rough idea of how many camping places to book (Whats App or safety@wokinghamcanoeclub.co.uk). There may be an opportunity to book additional places if you cannot commit at this stage. Once I have confirmed with a campsite you will need to pay a deposit to secure your place on the trip.

Kind regards

White Water safety training

Saturday 5 October

Llandysul

A few of us have decided to do the BC/UK Paddling 2 day White Water Safety course. There may be a few places left with the provider, so I am opening it out to the wider club members.

Details:

Suitable for: "It is designed to support paddlers to be independent participants on grade 2(3) white water rivers."
Overview: https://britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/white-water-safety/
Duration: 2 days
Location: Llandysul Padlers https://llandysul-paddlers.org.uk/, Afon Teifi
Cost: £200 inlcuding 2 night bunkhouse accomodation and training costs
Dates: 5&6th October 2024 (travel up on the evening of Friday 4th, 3.5 hour drive).

Its a practical course, so you will be spending most of the time outdoors in and around the river getting wet. A dry suit is not essential but it would make your 2 days more comfortable.

Please let me know if you would like to attend this course and I will see if the provider still has places available and get you booked on.

Kind Regards
